HT-Paxos: High Throughput State-Machine Replication Protocol for Large Clustered Data Centers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Paxos is a prominent theory of state-machine replication. Recent data intensive systems that implement state-machine replication generally require high throughput. Earlier versions of Paxos as few of them are classical Paxos, fast Paxos, and generalized Paxos have a major focus on fault tolerance and latency but lacking in terms of throughput and scalability. A major reason for this is the heavyweight leader. Through offloading the leader, we can further increase throughput of the system. Ring Paxos, Multiring Paxos, and S-Paxos are few prominent attempts in this direction for clustered data centers. In this paper, we are proposing HT-Paxos, a variant of Paxos that is the best suitable for any large clustered data center. HT-Paxos further offloads the leader very significantly and hence increases the throughput and scalability of the system, while at the same time, among high throughput state-machine replication protocols, it provides reasonably low latency and response time.

HT-Ring Paxos: Theory of High Throughput State-Machine Replication for Clustered Data Centers
Implementations of state-machine replication (SMR) prevalently use the variants of Paxos. Some of the recent variants of Paxos like, Ring Paxos, Multi-Ring Paxos, S-Paxos and HT-Paxos achieve significantly high throughput. However, to meet the growing demand of high throughput, we are proposing HT-Ring Paxos, a variant of Paxos that is basically derived from the classical Paxos. Moreover, it al...
متن کاملDesigning Distributed Systems Using Approximate Synchrony in Data Center Networks
Distributed systems are traditionally designed independently from the underlying network, making worst-case assumptions (e.g., complete asynchrony) about its behavior. However, many of today’s distributed applications are deployed in data centers, where the network is more reliable, predictable, and extensible. In these environments, it is possible to co-design distributed systems with their ne...
متن کاملTuning Paxos for High-Throughput with Batching and Pipelining
Paxos is probably the most known state machine replication protocol. Two optimizations that can greatly improve its performance are batching and pipelining. Their effectiveness depends significantly on the system properties, mainly network latency and bandwidth, but also on the CPU speed and properties of the application. This makes it hard to know when and how to use each optimization to achie...
متن کاملRing Paxos: High-Throughput Atomic Broadcast†
Atomic broadcast is an important communication primitive often used to implement state-machine replication. Despite the large number of atomic broadcast algorithms proposed in the literature, few papers have discussed how to turn these algorithms into efficient executable protocols. This paper focuses on a class of atomic broadcast algorithms based on Paxos, with its corresponding desirable pro...
متن کاملMencius: Building Efficient Replicated State Machine for WANs
We present a protocol for general state machine replication – a method that provides strong consistency – that has high performance in a wide-area network. In particular, our protocol Mencius has high throughput under high client load and low latency under low client load even under changing wide-area network environment and client load. We develop our protocol as a derivation from the well-kno...
